In July 2012, the German Federal Ministry of Environment decided to fund the LithoRec II research project, to implement the recycling of lithium-ion batteries of electric vehicles in pilot scale. The project is conducted by eight well-known companies and two renowned universities. It is divided into three parts, i.e. research (development and fundamental improvements of processes), piloting (scale up to a pilot plant scale to handle batteries under industrial-like conditions) and a cross-project part (evaluation of methods from ecological and economic aspects as well as project management). From mid-2014 the pilot plant will be in operation, so that considerable quantities of EV batteries will be recycled.
